UPS Joins FedEx in Planning Delivery Service on Aug. 29 as Damage Permits

United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) and FedEx Corp. (FDX), the biggest package-delivery companies, said they intend to resume normal operations tomorrow as damage from Tropical Storm Irene permits.

“Our intent is to dispatch Monday everywhere we’re allowed,” Norman Black, a spokesman for Atlanta-based UPS, said in an e-mail.

FedEx, which operates the world’s largest cargo airline, is preparing to move aircraft back to airports that were in Irene’s path as soon as the airports open and it can get employees in position to handle the planes and packages, said Scott Fiedler, a spokesman for the Memphis, Tennessee-based company.
Some customers may experience delays in pickups and deliveries because of downed trees and power failures, said Fiedler, who estimated that FedEx has more than 10,000 employees in the Irene storm zone.

FedEx ups Korea to Europe capacity with A300F

FedEx Express has announced that it has enhanced its services along the Asia-Europe route with the roll out of a new A300-600 aircraft on the existing route from Incheon, Korea into Europe over the FedEx Asia-Pacific hub in Guangzhou, China, ten times per week.

The maximum load capacity of an A300-600 aircraft is approximately 50 tonnes, about 13 tonnes more than the A310-300 currently used on the route, which will allow for more goods to be transported.

The new aircraft deployment was launched in Guangzhou and a number of key locations throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa. This latest enhancement is expected to assist in meeting the increased demands for logistics services in Asia-Pacific and Europe, FedEx said in a statement. In addition, FedEx plans to deploy the new freighters in the FedEx AsiaOne network, which connects major cities in Asia within 24 hours.

DHL consolidates Asian road network

DHL Global Forwarding has consolidated its network of secure road freight services connecting Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand with three new services - DHL Asiaconnect, DHL Asialine and DHA Asianet.

DHL Asiaconnect provides an LTL connection from Singapore to Penang, with overnight delivery, and a two-day door-to-door service from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok.

"DHL Global Forwarding has been offering customers road freight services in Asia for years as it is faster than sea, cheaper than air and can offer customers more pick-up flexibility and shorter lead times." said Amadou Diallo, DHL Global Forwarding CEO for Africa and South Asia Pacific.

How express service company calculate the shipping costs?

Most of our customers don't know how express service company calculate the shipping cost. This is very important. Because nobody would like to be charged more. Therefore, it is time to make it clear now.
UPS, Fedex, DHL and TNT are the biggest global express service company in the world. They use the same method to calculate the shipping costs.

The quotation of Express service company based on the WEIGHT. The unit they calculate the cost is 0.5KG. If the weight of a package is less than 0.5KG, they will calculate it as 0.5KG. For example, if a package is 1.55KG, they will calculate as 2KG rather than 1.5KG.

However, when they receive the package, they not only consider the weight, but also the volume. If the weight is bigger than the volume, they calculate the costs by the real weight. Otherwise, they calculate by the volume weight. What is volume weight? Volme weight is noun using only on freight industry. The formula of volume weight is length*width*height/5000, the unit for length is CM, the unit of volume weight is KG.

Take an example, if the weight of a parcel is 4.2KG, Length is 28CM, Width is 22CM, Height is 22CM. So volume weight is 28*22*22/5000=2.72KG. Therefore, express service company will calculate your parcel as 4.5KG.

Take another example, if the weight of a parcel is 4.2KG, Length is 38CM, Width is 32CM, Height is 32CM. So volume weight is 38*32*32/5000=7.79KG. Therefore, express service company will calculate your parcel as 8KG.

Different shipping agent have different discount. So it is difficult to tell you what cost is reasonable. However, since you know how they calculate now, you can do something save your money, such as reduce the size of the package. If the weight or the volume weight is 4.52KG, you'd better try to make it lighter or smaller.
